Fiber arrays, in simple words, are one or two-dimensional arrays, particularly used for optical fibers. They’re used for various purposes. For instance, the coupling to photonic integrated circuits (PICs), AWGs (Arrayed waveguide gratings ) ,VOAs ( variable optical attenuators ) , PLCs (Planer Lightwave Circuit ) , optical transceivers or Lidar (light detection and ranging ). The array is mounted in a package to hold it in alignment.

 

Fiber array channels from single channels up to 256ch , but below 64ch are mainstream application for nowadays .

 

Fiber optic arrays are used by the telecommunications industry to connect optical fibers and waveguide chips. These arrays position optical cores accurately within V-groove blocks. Fiber optic arrays are a mainstay of the telecommunications industry and are used in myriad applications from signal transmission to data storage.

 

A fiber array is defined as “a system in which a number of individual optical fibers are positioned in an ordered arrangement”. An alternative definition is “An assembly of optical fibers in which the ends are arranged in a regular pattern”.

 

The difference between these definitions is whether or not the fibers have to be attached at the ends. Both types can be used as faceplates for optical fiber ribbon (coupling elements), which are used to couple light between free space and fiber optic cables.

 

Fiber arrays are suitable for a variety of harsh environments , such as I-Temp ( Industrial temperature ) -40°C ~ 85°C ; PM ( Polarization maintaining ) fiber array also become popular .

 

Fiber arrays have become commercially important since their first practical application was reported when they were introduced as a device for coupling free-space lasers to fiber optic cables. Since then, many different types and sizes of fiber arrays have been produced.
